Questions & Answers
What is Tallow?
Tallow is a nutrient-rich oil rendered from beef fat. It has been used for centuries in skincare because of its incredible ability to nourish and protect the skin naturally.
Why use tallow in skincare?
Tallow closely mimics the natural oils (sebum) our skin produces, making it incredibly compatible and beneficial for all skin types. It’s packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, which help support skin barrier function, hydration, and healing.
Fun fact: sēbum in latin actually translates to tallow
Where do you source your tallow?
We carefully source our tallow from trusted local farms on Vancouver Island that raise grass-fed cattle. Quality and sustainability as well as supporting local businesses are super important to us!
Is it safe to put tallow on my body?
Yes! Tallow is completely safe and actually very soothing for the skin. It’s ideal for dry, sensitive, or irritated skin — and gentle enough for little ones, too.
Difference Between whipped tallow or tallow balm
The main difference is the texture and ease of applying. Whipped Tallow is light, fluffy and easier to apply as it is soft and aerated. A tallow balm is solid and will need to be scooped out, heated up in your hands and then applied. The results will be the same, it just tends to be a personal preference.
What’s the shelf life of your tallow products?
Our tallow products usually last 6 to 12 months if stored properly. Just keep it in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight. Because we don’t use preservatives, proper storage helps it stay fresh and effective longer.
Does tallow have a smell?
Great question! We gently purify our tallow during the rendering process to reduce any strong scent. You may notice a very faint, natural aroma — but most people find it mild and pleasant, especially once it's applied. Like any natural product like olive oil, coconut oil or butter, they all have unique scents and the same is said for Tallow. It can be described as having a light buttery smell but it most certainly wont make you smell like a piece of meat!
Why are most of these products preservative free?
We choose to keep majority of our products preservative-free because we believe less is more — especially when it comes to what you put on your skin.
Fewer ingredients mean less chance of irritation, especially for sensitive skin. Preservatives (even the “natural” ones) can sometimes be harsh or cause reactions — and that’s the opposite of what we want.
Our products are meant to nourish your skin the way nature intended — clean, gentle, and pure. Preservative-free lets the raw beauty of the ingredients shine.
